According to a recentsurvey, the Citadella is the place Hungarians consider to offer the most stunning views of Budapest. In a survey for Visit Hungary, 489 Hungarian visitors at Sziget Festival were asked which location in the capital they thought offered the finest panorama.

The Citadella came out a clear winner, with 40% of respondents choosing it as their number one viewpoint. The iconic landmark atop Gellért Hill comfortably took first place, followed by Fisherman’s Bastion with 23% and the Danube riverfront with 13%.

Other well-loved choices included the area around Parliament, named by 7% of respondents, while the Normafa hill and Danube sightseeing boats each received 6%. Castle Garden Bazaar rounded out the list with 5%.

The Citadella’s popularity is a testament to the uniquely exceptional setting of Gellért Hill. From its summit, most of Budapest’s iconic landmarks unfold before you in a single sweeping panorama: the Danube, Parliament, Buda Castle, the city’s bridges and the distinctive cityscape of Pest. Few places offer such a spectacular perspective on Budapest, bringing the capital’s historic and contemporary faces together in one unforgettable view.

Culture one of Budapest’s greatest attractions

The survey also explored what Hungarians consider the capital’s greatest attraction. Cultural experiences, including museums and exhibitions, came out on top, with 40% of respondents highlighting them as a major reason to visit Budapest.

Concerts and festivals followed with 28%, while the city’s legendary thermal baths and wellness facilities attracted 12%. Green spaces and natural attractions were named by 7%, gastronomic experiences by 6%, Christmas markets and seasonal programmes by 4%, and sporting events by 3%.

The Citadella is a particularly remarkable destination where history, culture and breathtaking views come together. The Bastion of Liberty exhibition tells the story of Hungary’s struggles for freedom, while from the top of Gellért Hill, visitors can take in one of the most sensational panoramas Budapest has to offer.

Castle Garden Bazaar also among Budapest’s favourite viewpoints.

Castle Garden Bazaar also featured among the locations highlighted in the survey. From the terraces and surrounding spaces of this riverside architectural complex, Budapest reveals itself from a unique perspective. The views of the Danube, Chain Bridge and Parliament make Castle Garden Bazaar a memorable place to experience the city and take in its iconic panorama.

The survey results are a reminder of one of Budapest’s greatest strengths: its extraordinary variety. Historic architecture, world-class cultural attractions, the Danube and amazing viewpoints all contribute to the distinctive atmosphere that makes Budapest such a captivating destination.
