Renewed Citadella Reaches Final of One of World's Most Prestigious Architecture Awards
The transformation of the Citadella – The Bastion of Liberty has been shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival 2026 in the Completed Buildings – Creative Re-use category. The winners of one of the world's most prestigious architectural awards will be determined by an international jury at the final of the festival in Florida this November. The nomination is a recognition of the project's significance on the international stage.
A total of 416 projects from around the world have been shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival 2026, with the renewed Citadella among them. The reconstruction was entered by art1st design studio Kft., led by principal architect Dániel Taraczky, in the "Completed Buildings - Creative Re-use" category, which recognises buildings that have been successfully reinvented for modern use through innovative design while respecting their existing character.
The aim of the project was to transform the formerly closed fortress into an accessible and welcoming public space, open to all. The redevelopment established new parks, promenades, viewing terraces, exhibition spaces and accessible routes throughout the site, while preserving and highlighting its historic values.
The shortlisted projects will be presented to the international jury in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, this November. Reaching the final is already an incredible professional achievement, but the Citadella will now be competing both for the category award and for the overall title of “Completed Building of the Year”.
